Bobby, a communist student union leader who struggles with anger control, is the main character of the film. He gets into confrontations with Bulliah's brother, a local politician, and pushes a girl from his college to try suicide by torturing her with repeated attempts at love. When Bobby runs across Lilly after coming out of lock-up, she causes him a small mishap. He discovers that Lilly was his childhood buddy and the cousin of his neighbor Jaya after he takes her money away to maintain his bike.
Bobby learns that Lilly is a state-level cricket player during a game and develops feelings for her. But Lilly advises Bobby to settle disputes amicably rather than by picking fights. She also says that she lost her brother in a fight that happened on a college campus.
Bobby declares his love for Lilly during Jaya's marriage, but she rejects him. To meet her and tell her how he feels, he takes a journey to Hyderabad. Bobby is afraid about Lilly's overwhelming hostility, but Lilly agrees to correct it. Their intense relationship lasts until the day when Bobby is sucked into a brawl with Bulliah's brother's gang, which ultimately results in Bulliah's brother's death.
For the sake of his loved ones' peace of mind, Lilly counsels Bobby to give up his aggressive impulses. She issues a challenge to him: either learn to manage his wrath and stay with her, or leave her forever. At this request, Bobby loses his cool and forces Lilly to leave the hospital, urging her to get embarrassed in front of loved ones.
Cricket player Bobby acknowledges his error and tries to contact Lilly, who requests that he stop bothering her. In search of inner serenity, he moves away from home and joins a team working on a sound therapy project. Three years later, Bobby travels to Hyderabad with his group to present their findings to a doctor. When Bobby is asked if he visited Lilly in the hospital, Jaya and her husband walk by. Bobby is upset and depressed to hear that Lilly had an accident at National Selection. In an effort to treat her mentally and physically, he drives her to Kerala.
When Lilly gets back home, the doctor greets her and alerts her to the pain that may be lurking inside. Bobby ignores her and hands her his digital voice recorder, telling her to listen to it if she experiences any discomfort. When they are invited to the wedding of mutual friends, Lilly is taken aback by Bobby's increased maturity. She wants Bobby to marry her, but he tells her that their marriage is not urgent and advises her to concentrate on her professional aspirations.
Lilly surprises him by telling him that she has permanently quit cricket. Bobby begins to question why Lilly seems to have lost all interest in cricket. Bobby meets Rubina, Lilly's old friend and teammate, one day, and she tells him all there is to know about Lilly's life after he left. Lilly's group took home a high-profile competition and received the title of "best player." A BCCI south-zone selector named Ramesh Rao has feelings for Lilly and insists they have a sexual encounter in order for her to be picked for the national squad. Fearing a confrontation, Lilly declines to file a complaint, but Rubina does so on her behalf. After physically abusing Lilly and Rubina, Ramesh Rao leaves Lilly with significant mental scars and sends her into a depressive and psychological collapse.
Bobby, a former cricket player, is enraged upon discovering about Ramesh Rao's alleged sexual harassment. Lilly is comforted by the reappearance of his former enthusiasm for her as he sobs in front of her and apologizes for leaving her. After escorting Lilly to the police station, Bobby officially files a complaint against Rao. Lilly understands that Bobby has decided to punish Rao as a result of his emotional change, but she won't go along with his intentions.
Bobby attempts to talk Lilly out of running away from her life after she makes the decision to meet up with the groom her family has chosen for her. Lilly, on the other hand, believes they will have a future together and holds him responsible for his absence from her life years ago. She informs Bobby, much to his dismay, that she will forget him in a few years, just as he had forgotten her.
Bobby walks away from Lilly and flashes back to his time spent in Ladakh, where he had made vain attempts to achieve serenity. Ignorant of all of this, Lilly becomes fixated on the idea of losing Bobby permanently after learning that her marriage is set to take place within the month. She frantically reaches for Bobby's previous voice recorder, which had the private notes he had written to her throughout the years they were apart.
As soon as Bobby's assault on Rao is captured on camera, it becomes a nationwide scandal. Now that Lilly and her family are in the public eye, the Board of Control for Cricket in India forms a four-person committee to look into the claims made against Rao.
Bobby is arrested by a police officer who is looking into a sexual assault case. Bobby is Ramesh Rao's friend. Bobby forces Lilly to lie in order to free Ramesh, refusing to let him go even after being threatened. Although Lilly clarifies in her evidence before the BCCI committee that Ramesh did not harass her sexually, Bobby becomes discouraged and gives up on pursuing justice. In court, Ramesh Rao makes fun of Bobby and Lilly and demands an apology for unfounded accusations. Furious, Lilly assaults Ramesh Rao and admits to abusing his position as a selection by pestering her sexually. Bobby observes from the sidelines as the fervent cricket player makes a comeback. Lilly begs Bobby to have a friend who encourages her on her quest and gives her bravery. After their reunion and acceptance of who they really are, Bobby sends Lilly off at the National Cricket Academy.
